Laurel Schoenbohm

Laurel Schoenbohm grew up in the Midwest, but read a few too many Jack London and Robert Service books and dreamt of more: more wildness, more mountains, more adventure. And so she moved to Alaska at the age of twenty-two. She spent over nine years in the Great North, and it has never left her heart, nor will it ever. Of those years, seven were spent working on various types of boats from whale watching to tugboats, but the most beloved of those were commercial fishing boats. She spent those years adventuring and working, plying all the waters from Sand Point to Southeast Alaska, and even down to southern California and back up to Alaska again.

 

Then, after turning thirty, she moved to the Pacific Northwest, a little closer to home but still close to the sea. There she has remained with a foot in the maritime and derelict vessel/salvage industry. Thanks to her current job, she also has gained experience working on wildfire responses.

One common thread throughout her varied maritime career has been her lifelong love of writing. In addition to this book, Laurel has updated the Interior section of Fodor’s Alaska 2009, 2010, and 2011 guidebooks. She has also published articles in several magazines.
